about

A project conceived by Sir Tumes (then Core Rhythm) in Barcelona, Spain in 2011. Tumes had the concept of making a full Hip hop band, one that truly embodied what he saw as Hip hop's core elements: samples, loops, grooves, progressive sonics, and instrumentation that supported these principles. Tired of Hip hop "jam bands" that tried to "recreate" tracks live, Tumes aimed for a band where what you heard on record would happen live (and vice versa), making that Hip hop aesthetic breathe live. So Tumes called in two of his closest collaborators, Marc Ayza, one of Spain's premier drummers and Bassist/Instrumentalist Thomas Kent Warburton Jr. to form the trio GrandMixer.

The name GrandMixer is a homage to one of Tumes first mentors in music, GrandMixer DXT, but also it was a reminder of the aim of the group, how can we continue the true-school aim of progressive sonics in Hip hop music? It was a highly productive year of music-making, experimenting in the studio with different ideas and approaches but all starting from the sample, the loop, the essence of Hip hop music. They also did a handful of shows that were the talk of Barcelona at that time. It was something quite remarkable not only for the area, but for Hip Hop in general.

And now 9 years later here we are. The project had to put on hold for a number of years due to circumstances of life. But Tumes never lost faith that at least a piece of the collaboration would get to the wider world, so when COVID-19 started he dedicated himself to getting this project out. Feverishly digging into his Ableton Live and Pro Tools sessions, fighting program obsolescence, and adding new pieces where needed and then finally enlisting the expertise of engineer Willie Green to help finalize the sonic vision. This isn't every song GrandMixer created, these are the songs Produced by Tumes that were the closest to being finished. There are songs Produced by Warburton that hopefully will see the light of day, and some jam session songs that may get out there to the people. But these 5 right here are what we have for the moment and we hope it gives a taste of what was envisioned. And who knows, possibly spark more GrandMixer in the future.

We hope you all enjoy.
